The Study Room

In September 2007 Wakefield Tutorial School established a computer suite in the Study Room. The suite consists of five computers with flat screen monitors and speakers and an interactive white board. All the computers are networked and linked to the internet.

The children are enjoying developing their ICT skills both in specific ICT lessons and in other areas of the curriculum.

Visit to the Media Museum

On Thursday 20th September the junior children visited the National Media Museum in Bradford. After a short look around the museum the children listened to a fascinating story about the Cottingley fairies.

The children were told that the lady in the photograph was now a grandma and although she still said the fairies were real she had admitted that the photographs were a trick and how they had tricked many people.

The second workshop looked at Victorian portraits. The children had a chance to examine some old photographs with white gloves on and even pose for a Victorian Portrait. Can you work out which is the father, mother and child in each portrait?

Having had a lovely morning the children were to have an even better afternoon taking part in an animation workshop. This involved every child (and Mrs. Tanner) making a dog similar to Gromit from Wallace and Gromit. The children were split into 2 groups and each group produced a short story for their characters. Using a digital camera and a computer a series of about 20 still photographs were taken. These were then run together to make a movie in a process called stop motion animation.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning

On Friday 28th September 2007 Wakefield Tutorial Preparatory School hosted a coffee morning to raise money for the Macmillan Nurses. This was part of a country wide event where different organizations hold a coffee morning at the same time.

Family and guests were invited for coffee and cakes. A raffle was organized and the children helped sell and fold the tickets.

Visitors were treated to musical entertainment by both the infants and the juniors. Amy Cassar played a solo on her flute.

At the end of the morning it was announced that the school had raised £280 for the Macmillan Nurses.

A great day was enjoyed by all!

Thackray Museum Visit

On Tuesday 9th October 2007 form 5/6 went to visit the Thackray Medical Museum as part of the Victorian History Topic.

The children learnt about the diseases faced by Victorian people and different cures that they tried to relieve the symptoms. Everyone chose a character as they entered the museum and found out their fate at the end. A baby called Martha died of Whooping Cough. A lady called Mary died of scarlet fever. One character caught TB but survived to the grand old age of 45 years old.

After finding out about important scientists and doctors in Victorian times the children had the opportunity to visit a section about the human body.

Do you think this toilet is big enough for all four of them?

The museum was very interesting and well worth a visit. To find out more visit their website.

Ancient Greek Day

On Thursday 22nd November 2007 Form 3/4 had an Ancient Greek Day!

The day started with everyone dressing in a Toga followed by the making of Olive Branch crowns. These were traditionally given as prizes in the Olympic Games.

Next the children practised a play "Theseus and the Minotaur." Costumes were organised for the dress rehearsal in the afternoon.

Before break time the children had the opportunity to make some Greek Tzatziki. This is a dip based on Greek Yoghurt, cucumber and mint. Other foods were tasted including pita bread, feta cheese and olives.

After break time it was the Olympic Games! All children took part in the ancient pentathlon.

This consisted of:
  • Javelin
  • Discus
  • Running
  • Long Jump
  • Wrestling

Some events were adapted for safety but points were awarded and Charlie came away with the gold - Olive Crown.

Finally in the afternoon it was time for the all important dress rehearsal. "Theseus and the Minotaur" was performed for parents in assembly the next day.

A great day was enjoyed by all!

Christmas Fair

On Saturday 1st December 2007 WTS held a Christmas Fair.

There were lots of stalls including the cake stall, bottle stall and tombola.

Refreshments were served and everyone was entertained by majorettes as well as our own school choir.

The event raised over £1000 for school funds.

Our thanks go to the Friends of WTS and Daniel DJ for helping make the fair a great success.

Well Done!

Shoe Box Appeal

Wakefield Tutorial Preparatory School helped the charity Samaritan's Purse by collecting over 30 shoe boxes. These will provide Christmas presents to needy children in deprived areas of the world.

Well done to everyone who helped!
